Find an ElectricianAbout Outlets, Switches & Dedicated Circuits
Adding outlets and circuits is the everyday electrical work that keeps a house usable. Kitchen renovations across Metro Vancouver drive most of it: the BC Electrical Code requires split or 20A counter receptacles at set spacing, dedicated circuits for the fridge, dishwasher, microwave and range, and GFCI protection near the sink. Bathrooms, garages and outdoor receptacles all need GFCI protection, and bedrooms and most living areas now need AFCI protection on new circuits.
Dedicated circuits are also what hot tubs, saunas, workshop tools, window heat pumps and in-floor heating need. A hot tub is a 50A or 60A GFCI-protected circuit with a disconnect within sight of the tub, and it is a permit-and-inspection job every time. Basement suites, which are common across Vancouver and the suburbs, often need circuits separated so the suite is on its own breakers or its own panel.
Switch and receptacle replacement is quick work on modern copper wiring. On aluminum wiring the devices have to be CO/ALR rated and the connections corrected, and on ungrounded two-wire circuits a GFCI receptacle is the code-accepted way to add protection without rewiring. Homeowners in BC can apply for a homeowner electrical permit for work on their own principal residence, but most people hand this to a licensed contractor who pulls the permit and gets it inspected.
