Fall and winter windstorms knock out power across Metro Vancouver every year, and the North Shore, the Fraser Valley edge and anywhere with big trees get the longest outages. The only code-compliant way to run a portable generator into the house is a transfer switch or a generator interlock at the panel, installed by a licensed electrician on a permit, at $800 to $2,500 depending on the panel and whether a dedicated inlet and critical-loads sub-panel are added. Backfeeding through a dryer outlet is illegal and can kill a BC Hydro line worker.

A whole-home surge protector at the panel runs $300 to $700 installed and is the cheapest protection for a heat pump, an EV charger and the electronics that sustained overvoltage during storm faults destroys.

What you will actually pay

The generator or battery hardware is separate; these are the installation figures.

Backup power installation, Metro Vancouver
JobTypical rangeWhat sets it
Generator interlock kit on the existing panel, with outdoor inlet$800 to $1,500Manual; prevents main and generator breakers being on together
Manual transfer switch with critical-loads sub-panel$1,500 to $2,500You choose which circuits stay live
Automatic transfer switch for a standby generator$2,500 to $5,000 installedPlus the generator, gas or propane supply and its own permits
Home battery system installation (electrical portion)$2,000 to $6,000Hardware $10,000 to $20,000; BC Hydro interconnection approval if it exports
Whole-home surge protector at the panel$300 to $700Type 2 device on a dedicated breaker
Hardwired battery backup for a sump pump$300 to $900Often just a dedicated circuit and a plug-in unit

What moves the price

Panel make and space first: an interlock kit has to be listed for your specific panel, and a full panel needs a sub-panel for the critical loads. Inlet location second: the generator must run outdoors well away from windows and doors, so the inlet goes where the generator will live. Third, gas: a standby generator on natural gas or propane needs a gas permit and a licensed gas fitter as well as the electrical permit. Batteries and solar that export to the grid need BC Hydro's interconnection approval, which the installer handles; a battery that only backs up the house does not export but still needs the electrical permit.

Permits and inspections in Metro Vancouver

Seven Metro Vancouver local governments run their own electrical permit and inspection programs: the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, the City of North Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Maple Ridge. Everywhere else in Metro Vancouver, including Richmond, Delta, Langley, White Rock, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, New Westminster and Pitt Meadows, the electrical permit is issued by Technical Safety BC. Residential electrical permit fees typically run $150 to $300 and belong inside the quote, not as a surprise on the invoice.

What a fair quote includes

  • The interlock or transfer switch model and confirmation it is listed for your panel
  • The inlet, its location and the cable rating
  • Which circuits are on the critical-loads panel, if one is added
  • The electrical permit and inspection, and the gas permit for a standby unit
  • BC Hydro interconnection paperwork for any system that exports

Ask before you hire

  • The contractor's Technical Safety BC licence number, which you can verify online, and proof of current WorkSafeBC coverage
  • Whether the permit, the inspection and any BC Hydro coordination are inside the price
  • What changes the price if they open a wall or a panel and find aluminum wiring, knob-and-tube or a full panel
  • Whether drywall or exterior repair is included or quoted separately
  • How long the quote is valid, and whether a deposit is required before materials are ordered

Common questions

Interlock or transfer switch?

An interlock is cheaper and works with a portable generator feeding the whole panel, which you manage by turning breakers off. A transfer switch with a critical-loads panel is cleaner and safer for a household that will use it every winter.

Do I need a permit for an interlock kit?

Yes. It modifies the panel and adds an inlet circuit, so it is a permit and inspection.
