Find an ElectricianAbout EV Charger Installation
British Columbia has one of the highest EV adoption rates in North America, and a Level 2 charger at home is the difference between a car that charges overnight and one that limps along on a wall outlet. The electrical side is a dedicated 240V circuit, typically 40A to 60A, from the panel to the parking spot, with a hardwired charger or a NEMA 14-50 receptacle at the end. The permit and inspection are the same as any new circuit, and a licensed contractor is required for the work to be eligible for provincial and municipal rebates.
The first question is always panel capacity. Many Metro Vancouver homes on 100A service cannot take a 48A charger without a service upgrade or a load-management device that shares capacity with the range or dryer. The second is the run: a garage on the panel wall is a short job, while a detached garage or a laneway house in East Vancouver can mean trenching and conduit. In strata buildings the work goes through the strata council first, often under an EV-ready plan, and usually involves a metered circuit from a common-area panel with load management shared across several stalls.
CleanBC Go Electric rebates cover part of the charger and installation cost for eligible homes and stratas, and the City of Vancouver requires EV-ready parking in new construction. Your contractor should confirm the charger is certified for use in Canada, size the breaker to the charger's continuous rating, and provide the inspection certificate you need for the rebate claim.
